Spring is right around the corner! Soon our environment will bloom. Plants is one of our first units in spring. We love using a variety of plant activities and crafts to make this a memorable unit! This unit has enough materials and keeps student interest for about two weeks. Not all of the activities are shown!
What to Include in the Unit
We spend our time learning about types of plants, parts of a plant, plant life cycle, what plants need to live and plants we eat.
Plants need air, sunlight, water and nutrients. In kindergarten we talk about soil, but I do also use the word nutrients and describe what this mean. I start with visuals and move to a variety of activities and crafts throughout the two weeks.
Each plant part has a specific role. We take the time to look at each part and the job specific to that part. We label the parts as a large group and then complete several large group activities. Throughout the two weeks we will revisit plant parts and jobs using a variety of activities. Planting a bean in our little greenhouse shown below, would be a great way to show not only plant parts, but the plant life cycle.
Throughout the unit we also talk about plants that we eat and the concept living and non-living.
