Farm Centers

Farm Literacy Centers for Kindergarten is our new unit.  This unit is perfect for kindergarten in the spring.  This unit is bundled with Farm Animals Vocabulary and Sorting (with real pictures).

This is one of my favorite activities in the unit.  The boys and girls will love the cute farm animals at the top (and you only have to print and it is ready to go:)).  The boys and girls at the center will roll a dice and write the word next to the number rolled.  I always encourage students to use lots of different colored pencils.  The animal that is reached by the words first wins.  The boys and girls color the winning farm animal.

My students love to build sight words, especially when there is an animal involved.  Students choose a card and then match the baby chicks to each letter to rebuild the word.  The boys and girls LOVE to write the word on the hen and baby chicks.

Who Lives on the Farm?  Is a word work activity that I love.  Students practice writing farm words and discuss animals that live on a farm.

Using the same vocabulary cards, the boys and girls will create the flip book below.  The boys and girls will practice giving each other clues and hints as to which animal is behind which barn.  That way when they get home they can have their parents guess.

I love to use crafts whenever possible.  You could hear a pin drop in the room during this activity.  Prior to starting we brainstorm all of the -en words that we can think of.  We decide the which words are real and which words are not real.  Then the boys and girls complete the step of the project to make their own Hen Family craft.  I like to read this with The Little Red Hen.
