What to Include in the Unit

Spring is right around the corner!  Soon our environment will bloom.  Plants is one of our first units in spring.  We love using a variety of plant activities and crafts to make this a memorable unit!  This unit has enough materials and keeps student interest for about two weeks. #plants #kindergarten

We spend our time learning about types of plants, parts of a plant, plant life cycle, what plants need to live and plants we eat.

Plant needs is one of the first lessons we work on. #plants #kindergarten

Plants need air, sunlight, water and nutrients.  In kindergarten we talk about soil, but I do also use the word nutrients and describe what this mean.  I start with visuals and move to a variety of activities and crafts throughout the two weeks.

Each plant part has a specific role.  We take the time to look at each part and the job specific to that part.  We label the parts as a large group and then complete several large group activities. Throughout the two weeks we will revisit plant parts and jobs using a variety of activities.  Planting a bean in our little greenhouse shown below, would be a great way to show not only plant parts, but the plant life cycle.
